Y2 Writing- The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark

By English, Year 2

Year 2 have loved reading books by our author of Autumn term Jill Tomlinson, including The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark. We used this book as a starting point for writing our own reports about owls. First, we found out lots of information about owls including what they look like, what they eat and what they do. Children were very adept at using scientific language in their reports and they included lots of interesting facts. To accompany our writing, we sketched our own owls based on the images from the story. We used skills learnt in our art lessons and our “pencil dictionaries” to add different patterns to our owls. The children worked extremely hard on their final pieces and I am sure you will agree that the end result is amazing!

Writing in Year 5 – Queen of the Falls

By English, Writing, Year 5

We found out about Annie Taylor by reading Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg. He tells the true story of Annie Taylor, a feisty 62-year-old woman, who became the first person to cross over Niagara Falls in a barrel!

Taylor’s story is one of pluck and ambition but she never achieves the fame and fortune that motivated her to undertake such a daring feat, in her lifetime.

We wrote a series of diaries about significant events in Annie Edson Taylor’s life. Did you know she pretended to be 42!

From the first day of school, we pay particular attention to good writing habits. By the end of the session you will know what we mean by BBC, TNT and lots of other useful tips.

We look forward to welcoming you in the school hall at 2:15pm. Grandparents are also welcome.

Thank you,

We have produced descriptive writing, diaries and letters about our Pathways to Write book – Star of Fear, Star of Hope.

Y2 Story Writing based on Leigh Hodgkinson’s “Troll Swap”

By English, Writing, Year 2

As part of our English lessons, Year 2 have been reading and writing about the text Troll Swap. We have also read other stories with troll characters like Trolls Go Home and The Finger Eater to further inspire our independent writing. For our final piece, we invented our own troll character and our own child character before writing a story in which the two swapped places, emulating the work of the authors that we had studied. I am so impressed with the standard of writing produced by all of Year 2. They have been working extremely hard on their handwriting, remembering punctuation and using conjunctions to extend their ideas. Well done Year 2!

Parent Reading Meeting

By Community, English, FS1, FS2, News, Reading, Year 1, Year 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

I would like to express my gratitude to all the parents who attended our reading parents meeting this afternoon. It was wonderful to see such a strong turnout. During the session, we discussed the essential techniques for effectively listening to children read using RWInc books.

Today, I will share the notes from the meeting on Class Dojo, which include video links to further support your understanding.  If you have any questions or require additional guidance, approach myself, Mrs. Whyman, or your child’s class teacher. We are all highly knowledgeable in the field of reading and are here to assist you.

For those who were unable to attend this meeting, please note that we will be rescheduling it during the Autumn Term. We believe this information is crucial for your involvement in your child’s reading progress, and we want to ensure that every parent has the opportunity to benefit from this session.

Warm regards,

Mrs Gurner

A HUGE thank you from the PTA

By Community, English, FS1, FS2, Fund Raising, Letters to Parents, PTA, Year 1, Year 2

We have some exciting news to share with you this week! Thanks to your incredible support at PTA events, we have received Toni’s, wonderful listening stations, for our nursery, reception, and year 1 and 2 classrooms. These listening stations will provide our students with the opportunity to enjoy their favourite stories during wet plays or quiet reading time.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the parents who have contributed to the PTA events, making it possible for us to acquire these valuable resources. On behalf of the children, we want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU for your generous support.

We are thrilled to share that we are currently in the process of designing a new outside quiet area for our KS2 students. The PTA has graciously agreed to fund this project, which will provide a serene and comfortable space for our older students to relax and engage in quiet activities.
