e-safety: Age Ratings for Video Games

• UKIE research showed 2 out of 5 parents buy their children age appropriate games.
• 50% of parents allowed their children to play games with age ratings unsuitable for their age.
• 24% of parents believe it is not important to examine game ratings.

Legislation:

In 2012, the government updated the law on game ratings. They are now mandatory and illegal to sell video games to children under the displayed age.
All games are age-rated by the Video Standards Council (VSC) under the Pan-European Games Information (PEGI) system. The clearly displayed PEGI age rating on the packaging will be accompanied by information about the type of content that led to the game receiving its classification.
