Sinai are selling prayer beads this Friday

By | FS2, House Sinai, News

From Friday, House Sinai are selling prayer beads in the school library for £1:50.

The beads remind the children of what they might like to pray for. For example, family, hope or courage.

The children are also selling Lord’s Prayer bracelets. These bracelets are to help children learn the Lord’s Prayer.

All money raised will go towards developing the outdoor area. We will keep you posted on how much money we have raised and what we have bought for the children.

Well done House Sinai!

Carmel’s Easter Treasure Hunt

By | FS2, House Carmel, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6

Carmel’s Easter Treasure Hunt was a great success today. We will announce the winning house in  collective worship tomorrow.

A huge thank you to the House Carmel’s Leaders. They organised the whole day and demonstrated their superb leadership skills.

The PTA rewarded all children with a chocolate egg- this was a welcome treat after the fast pace treasure hunt -in the cold Spring air!

Class Teacher

Miss Hoole

Fs2 Teacher \ EYFS Leader
I love inspiring children to write and so I run an Infants’ writing club each Tuesday lunch time in the ICT suite, where children can write freely about any topic they choose! I also enjoy creating exciting role-play areas in my classroom in order to enrich the children’s learning experience in FS2. One of my favorite children’s authors is Jez Alborough as the children really engage with the fun rhyming and fantastic illustrations. In my spare time, I enjoy reading murder mysteries and walking. I belong to House Team Jericho.

Introduction to Foundation Stage 2

In FS2 we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We deliver our creative and exciting curriculum through half termly topic based learning; however as we endeavor to engage and motivate each and every individual child our topics are constantly adapted to ensure that we plan for and meet the needs and interests of all of our children.

At St. Alban’s we place a great emphasis on encouraging children to be independent learners right from the beginning. A typical day in FS2 will consist of three whole class teaching sessions, followed by guided group work and independent learning time. Children can move freely between the indoor and outdoor areas during independent learning time and are continually supported and challenged by all of our staff in the Foundation Stage Team.

As the children progress through the year, the amount of structure during each session is gradually increased to ensure that all of our children are confident, independent learners ready to enter their next phase of education in Key Stage 1!

FS2 Curriculum Details

Spellings are individual to each child and can be found in your child’s red spelling book. They are checked and changed if appropriate each Friday.

Please feel free to bring in old boxes (cereal boxes etc.) and toilet roll/kitchen roll tubes as the children love to make models with these.

From now until we break up for the summer, P.E. will be on a Thursday pm. Please ensure your child has an outdoor P.E. kit with suitable footwear.

In FS2, we cover the following topics:-

Autumn 1 – All About Me – We will look at our likes and dislikes, our families and homes and our bodies.

Autumn 2 – Celebrations – We will learn what a celebration is, plan a party, discover Diwali and of course learn about the meaning of Christmas. We will also visit White Post Farm.

Spring 1 – Dinosaurs – We will learn dinosaur facts, go on a dinosaur hunt and read lots about Harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs.

Spring 2 – Space – We will learn all about the planets, and may even have some unexpected visitors from out of space.

Summer 1 – Traditional Tales – We will read many of the children’s favourites such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Hansel and Gretel and take a trip to Sundown Adventure Land.

Summer 2 – The Seaside – We will learn about features of the seaside, sea creatures and pirates. We will have our own indoor and outdoor beach and take a trip to Cleethorpes.

Here are the Early Learning Goals (ELG) for Numeracy and Literacy that we will be working towards your child achieving by the end of FS2.

Children read and understand simple sentences.
They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately.
They also read some common irregular words.
They demonstrate understanding when talking to others about what they have read.

Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways, which match their spoken sounds.
They also write some irregular common words.
They write simple sentences, which can be read by themselves and others.

Maths – Numbers
Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number.
Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single - digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer.

Maths –Shape, Space and Measure
Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems.
They recognise, create and describe patterns.
They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Tips for listening to your child read
Look at the pictures. What do you think the story is about? What is happening in this picture? How many words are on this page? Let’s count them together. Encourage your child to point to each word as they read (with your help if necessary).  Can you find some initial phonemes (sounds)? Can you sound out the letters in that word and then blend them together? Can you find the word that says …..?
After reading the book ask your child, what the story was about. What did they like about it?
Children will use a variety of strategies to learn to read including using the pictures for clues, using initial sounds to work out what the word says; by recognising repeated sentence patterns and by recognising some words on sight.
