Design Technology in Year 5 – Frame Structures – Making Bird Hides

By Design Technology, Year 5

Today, Year 5 continued our Design Technology Project – frame structures. We decided to make bird hides for Year 5 to watch wildlife.

We have already completed investigative and evaluative activities where we investigated and make annotated drawings of a range of portable and permanent frame structures. Then we completed focused practical tasks based on techniques for joining frameworks. Next, we designed and made a small scale frame structure.

He are a few of our small scale frames.

We thought about:

How we could make them stable?

How we could make them stronger?

Where were the weak points?

How we could reinforce them?

How we could improve the design?

We thought about the purpose of our project and the intended users.

Today we made our frame structures.

Now we need to critically evaluate our bird hides against our design specification, intended user and purpose.

Save the Children

By News

Seeing the harrowing television pictures from Ukraine can make people feel helpless.

The children are selling sunflowers to raise money for Save the Children, here at St Alban’s we would like to show our support to the people of Ukraine by introducing a donation page.

We have set this up as a donation item on School Money (Eduspot) under the shop item. You can donate any amount by changing the price in your basket, all of the money raised will be sent to Save the Children.

We will close the donation page on Thursday 7th April and send all the funds to Save the Children and we will let you know the final amount raised.

As always, we would like to thank you for your continued support in helping worthwhile charities.

Sunflowers for Ukraine

By Fund Raising, House Jericho

With Spring fast approaching, it’s time to brighten your garden with some beautiful sunflowers. House Jericho are selling packets of sunflower seeds and biodegradable pots of sunflower seedlings to help raise money for Save the Children to support Ukrainian families. The Ukrainian national flower is the sunflower so planting these is a symbol of St.Alban’s solidarity with Ukraine.

Sunflower seed packets are £2 each and biodegradable pots of seedlings are £2.50. All money will be going straight to the charity. To order, simply return your order form to your Jericho class ambassador with any payment (or class teacher in FS and KS1.) Orders can either be paid for with cash in an envelope with your name and year group on or online through School money. The deadline for returning complete forms is Friday 25th March.

Exciting Science in Year 5

By Science, Year 5

Today, William shared a science experiment from home.

He explained, “When the water is trying to get down because of gravity, the air stops it.  When you swizzle it, it makes the water go in a circle and it can go down into the bottom bottle.”

Can you see the tornado in the picture?

Tornado in a Bottle Experiment

Tornadoes are violent winds that create a funnel underneath a storm system. As the winds rotate, they often pick up speed, and eventually, they form what is called a funnel cloud — a column of water droplets, dust and other debris with a tapered shape extending from the base of a thunderstorm.

What Makes the Water Spin?

The water in the bottle is responding to centripetal force, a force that acts on a body moving in a circular motion. The motion is directed toward the centre, which is also referred to as the vortex.

Year 1 Design and Technology

By Design Technology, Year 1

Following our work on houses and homes and our walk to view different types of homes, we designed , made and evaluated our own home.  We had a focus on making hinges so that the doors and windows would open.

First we looked for hinges and found them in many places in the classroom, some Mrs Whyman didn’t even think of!

We then practised making different types of hinges and joins that we would use on our homes.

We then made our homes and evaluated them.

We also made homes from building blocks.

Fire Fighters visit Year 1

By Geography, PSHE, Visits, Year 1

Year 1 had a visit from the Fire service to support our learning.  Children were very excited and loved that the fire engine came up the drive flashing its lights and sirens.  We learnt about the different parts and equipment a fire engine has, sat inside the cab and got to use the fire hose.  It was very powerful.
